Apelles meeting with the little ass1 invited him to tea that very right. The little ass was trembling with delight. He prances2 through the wood; he pesters3 all who pass: "Apelles bores me so. He will not let me be, you know! Whenever him I see, he asks me in to tea. I"m sure he wants to paint a Pegasus from me."
"Oh no!" Apelles said as he happened to be near, "I am painting the judgment4 of King Midas. I"m acquainting with you because you seem to boast the proper length of ear. So if you"ll come to tea, most happy I shall be. For long-eared asses5 are not rare, but with the ears that you can show, no little or big ass either ever could compare!"
Consumed with vanity, the fool admires himself for that which others ridicule6, and often makes a boast of that which ought to shame him most.
A man once caught a weasel, which was always sneaking1 about the house, and was just going to drown it in a tub of water, when it begged hard for its life, and said to him, "Surely you haven"t the heart to put me to death? Think how useful I have been in clearing your house of the mice and lizards2 which used to infest3 it, and show your gratitude4 by sparing my life." "You have not been altogether useless, I grant you," said the Man: "but who killed the fowls5? Who stole the meat? No no! You do much more harm than good, and die you shall."
Legends hold that Shu was the king of the south sea. Hu was the king of the North Sea, and Hun Dun was the king of the center.
Shu and Hu often visited Hun Dun"s kingdom, and Hun Dun always gave them a feast. Shu and Hu decided1 to reciprocate(报答,互换) his hospitality. They consulted with each other, saying, "Every person has seven apertures4 (eyes, nose, ears and mouth) to see, hear, eat, and breathe, but Hun Dun does not have any. Let"s drill the seven apertures(孔径,开口) for him."
Then they drilled an aperture3 each day, and on the seventh day, they completed the seven apertures but Hun Dun died.
In ancient times, a man of the State of Song picked up a stone in Linzi. He examined it over and over and regarded it as a treasure. He quickly took it home, wrapped it up in dozens of silk layers, then put it in a leather box. But he still felt uneasy, so he covered the box with dozens of boxes.
When a man who could identify treasures heard of this, he went at once to this man and asked to have a look at the treasure.
To be prudent1, this man of Song took a bath, burned incense2, cleansed3 his mind, calmed his mood, and went in for self- cultivation4 for seven days. Then be put on ceremonial robes, respectfully took out the box, and carefully took the stone out of the box.
When the man who knew about treasures saw it, he nearly burst into laughter, but quickly covered his mouth with his hand. He whispered close to the other"s ear: "This is a piece of stone, as worthless as a tile."
The man of Song thought the man who knew about treasures was envious5 of him and trying to cheat him. Much displeased6, he said: "Merchants always say others" wares7 are worthless, and doctors always say patients" illnesses are very serious, so that they themselves can make more money. I will not be fooled!"
Thereafter, he treasured this stone even more, and kept it in a very safe place.
