The sky and the earth were at first one blurred entity like an egg.Then Pangu was born into it.

Between them was Pangu, who went through nine changes every day, his wisdom greater than that of the sky and his ability greater than that of the earth. Every day the sky rose ten feet higher, the earth became ten feet thicker, and Pangu grew ten feet taller.
Another eighteen thousand years passed, and there was an extremely high sky, an extremely thick earth, and an extremely tall Pangu. 天地一分开，盘古觉得舒坦多了。他长长地透了口气，想站立起来，然而天却沉重地压在他的头上。他意识到天若不高高地升到高空，那么地上就永远不可能有生命存在。于是他坐下来沉思默想，怎样才能解决这一问题。最后，他断定，只有他把天托住，世上众生才能繁衍和生存。于是，盘古就手撑天，脚蹬地，努力地不让天压到地面上。日复一日，年复一年，光阴过去了一万八千年。这中间，盘古吃的只是飘进他嘴里的雾，他从不睡觉。开始，他只能用胳膊肘撑着，伏在膝盖上休息，因为他必须竭尽全力，用双手把天推向天空，终于，盘古可以将身体挺直，高举双手把天空向上托了，他的身子一天长一丈，天地也一天离开一丈，天升得越高，盘古的身躯也变得越长。天地被他撑开了九万里，他也长成了一个高九万里的巨人。
天终于高高定位于大地的上方，而盘古却感到疲惫不堪。他仰视双手上方的天，接着又俯视脚下深邃的大地。他断定天地之间已经有了相当的距离，他可以躺下休息，而不必担心天会塌下来压碎大地了。
于是盘古躺下身来，睡着了。他在熟睡中死去了。盘古是累死的，他开天辟地，耗尽了心血，流尽了汗水。在睡梦中他还想着：光有蓝天、大地不行，还得在天地间造个日月山川，人类万物。可是他已经累倒了，再不能亲手造这些了。最后，他想：把我的身体留给世间吧。
于是，盘古的身体使宇宙具有了形状，同时也使宇宙中有了物质。
盘古的头变了东山，他的脚变成了西山，他的身躯变成了中山，他的左臂变成了南山，他的右臂变成了北山。这五座圣山确定了四方形大地的四个角和中心。它们像巨大的石柱一样耸立在大地上，各自支撑着天的一角。
