词汇的基本含义是指对含有多个释义的词汇中构意能力最强的一组互相独立的含义。考生在第一轮单词复习中要注意强化记忆词汇的基本含义。
因为考研试题中常出现的词汇，其释义多为该词的基本含义，同时，只有熟练掌握词的基本含义才能达到在不同语境下进行词汇释义的全面记忆，进而才能理解考研英语文章所表达的准确含义。例如，occupy为大纲词汇，它的基本含义为1.占领，占用。2.使忙碌，使从事。关于这个单词，大部分考生往往会忽略第二个含义，但是在真题中确是比较重要的一个含义。因此，考生在复习词汇的时候，词义要掌握全面。
第二，掌握词汇生成的基本知识。
一个英语单词并不是一些毫无意义的鼓励的字母的随意排列，而是由一些含有具体意义的词根词缀所构成的有意义的整体。因此，要记忆一个单词，就不能按照一个个字母排列顺序去记，而是按照词根、词缀的意义去记。同时，《大纲》已经非常明确的给出了考研所涉及到的词根词缀表，考生要引起注意。
第三，掌握词汇之间的搭配关系。
首先要求考生不仅要将单词作为一个独立的语言要素进行记忆-记住它的发音、拼写和中文释义，还要学会如何将这些语言要素按照搭配选词的原则有效地搭配起来。对词汇之间的搭配的考查也是整个英语考研的侧重点，体现在英语知识运用，阅读理解，翻译，写作，它涉及到了考研的方方面面。考生在复习单词的时候，最好顺便准备单词的基本搭配以及考研中常考词组，这样就不会出现认识单词，不认识短语的窘境。
